Abstract
Between 2021 and 2024, Rwanda's economy exhibited remarkable resilience, rebounding from global and regional shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this recovery, food security and nutrition remain pivotal to the country's development agenda, with Rwanda making notable strides toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger). However, persistent structural barriers—including challenging topography and the increasing occurrence of climate-related shocks—continue to impede uniform progress nationwide. In response, the Government of Rwanda is implementing the National Strategy for Transformation and the Strategic Plan for the Agricultural Transformation (PSTA5), targeting the root causes of food and nutrition insecurity.
The 2024 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Assessment (CFSVA) presents critical insights into the current state of food security across the country. Key findings highlight the geographical distribution and profile of food-insecure households, patterns in food availability and pricing, gender dimensions of food access, dietary diversity, and malnutrition.
The report also explores the locations of malnourished populations, the nutritional status of children and women, and household coping capacities in the face of recurrent shocks. Together, these findings provide essential evidence to inform policy, programming, and strategic interventions aimed at achieving inclusive and sustainable food and nutrition security in Rwanda.
